What is a WMS and how can it help you?

Imagine this: You have a warehouse with 4000 different SKUs. They are distributed across 4000 different locations on 200 different shelves. It's almost unmanageable.

This is exactly the problem a WMS can help you with.

A WMS keeps track of where each product is located in your warehouse, how many of each product there are and how to pick an order. Or rather, how to pick the orders. Because if you have 200 shelves and 50 orders, it might make sense to pick orders 2, 7, 34, 38 and 45 together if they all contain items from Shelf no. 4.

As opposed to picking orders 1-5 first. Then orders 6-10 etc.

So in a nutshell, a WMS will provide

  • Having an overview of the location of your products
  • Keeping track of the number of products in stock
  • Keeping track of which orders are picked and especially which are not
  • Giving your employees the shortest route around the warehouse

Many WMS can also manage details such as

  • Picking the orders that are picked by the shipping company first
  • Making sure that some pickers don't lift heavy products
  • Measuring how far each employee walks
  • And how many picks they have, how many orders they handle and how many kilos they have lifted
  • Optimize inventory - if product X and Y are always sold together, they should be placed next to each other
  • To notify if the employee is picking the wrong product

So all in all, you'll need some kind of WMS at some point when your webshop gets big enough.

What WMSs are there?

Currently, Smartpack and Lagersystem are the only ones integrated with Shoporama.

But apart from these, there's Peak Warehouse System (also Danish developed) and Shiphero.
