You probably won't have to deal with your TOF number much and yes - it's hard to say why you need it.

When you have an acquirer agreement with an acquirer, you get a business number. You need to enter this into your payment gateway so that the payment gateway knows which agreement the payment is for and where to send the money. That's the short explanation of it.

In Denmark, you typically have two acquiring agreements. One for Dankort and the other for international cards.

And if you have that, you need a TOF number for your acquiring agreement to work.

So where do you get a TOF from?

If you have an acquiring agreement for international cards from e.g. ClearHaus, ClearHaus obtains a TOF through Nets.

Is that logical?

There's probably some logic to it, but to us regular dead people, it seems strange. But it works.
