If you want online payment on your webshop, you need a payment gateway. This is the software that ensures that the money transaction is secure, the amount is correct, the payment goes through and the money ends up with the right recipient.
You need three things to be able to accept payment online:
Here you can read about what a payment gateway is.
When a customer wants to pay for something in your webshop, the webshop keeps track of what the customer has in their basket and what their delivery details are. When the customer wants to pay, the webshop sends the customer to the payment gateway with information such as the order ID, which webshop it is and the amount. The payment gateway will then show the customer the option to enter credit card details. Once entered, the payment gateway will check that the merchant has an acquiring agreement that allows the merchant to accept payment from e.g. a Dankort. If it does, the payment gateway will check that the credit card has sufficient funds and whether 3D secure should be used for payment. If it is, the payment gateway will ensure that it is used.
Card providers place high demands on the payment gateway provider. Among other things, their software is security tested to prevent them from being hacked.
You should expect the payment gateway to cost from 49,- per month and upwards. The average Danish webshop pays around €200-250 ex VAT per month for a payment gateway. If you're very large, you'll probably pay more.
But that's just for using their service. In addition, they usually have various additional services that you have to pay for. For example, it's normal to pay a little per transaction - a MobilePay transaction usually costs between 80 and 100 øre. On top of that, you can purchase fraud checks and various other things that also cost money.
First of all, it's important that your payment gateway supports the payment methods you want to receive (e.g. credit card, MobilePay) and the languages your customers shop in.
Secondly, it's important that your payment gateway's payment window works in all browsers on all devices. This means it's important that the payment window works fine on an iPhone or in the Firefox browser.
Finally, we recommend two more things: That you can customize your payment window with e.g. your own logo and that the payment window loads quickly. A slow payment window can make people think something has gone wrong and interrupt the transaction.
In Denmark there are several payment gateways. Here are some of them, with the top three being the most well-known.
