What is the difference between open basket and closed basket?

Understand the difference between open and closed baskets in Shoporama - stock reservation, customer experience and which type is right for your online store.

Reading time: approx. {eight} minutes
Shopejer

In Shoporama you can choose between open basket and closed basket. The two types handle the order process differently and the choice affects both stock reservation and customer experience.

Closed cart

When a customer adds an item to the cart, the order is created immediately and the item is reserved in the warehouse. This means that other customers cannot buy the same item if there is only one in stock.

Benefits

  • Items are reserved so two customers can't buy the same item
  • You can send payment reminders via payment_mail.html
  • The order is already created when the customer goes to checkout

Disadvantages

  • Items get "locked" if the customer does not complete - others cannot buy them
  • Customer cannot change the order after reaching the payment window
  • Unpaid orders require manual or automatic cancellation

Auto-cancel: You can set up Shoporama to automatically cancel unpaid orders after a certain number of minutes. Find the setting under Settings → Auto-cancel order in your admin panel.

Open cart

With open basket, the order is only created when the customer completes the payment. Items are not reserved in the warehouse while in the basket.

Advantages of open basket

  • Items are never "locked" - they are always available to other customers
  • Customers are free to edit their order right up until payment
  • No unpaid orders that require cleanup

Disadvantages

  • Two customers can have the same item in the cart, even if only one is in stock
  • If one buys the item, the other can be left with an out of stock item
  • You have to manually handle out of stock situations during checkout

Which one should you choose?

The choice depends on your online store:

  • Closed cart is good if you sell unique or limited items where stock reservation is important
  • Open basket is good if you have plenty of stock and prioritize a flexible customer experience

You change the setting under the cogwheel (Settings) in your admin panel. Also read about the transactional emails that are relevant for both basket types.
