Countries and currencies
Guide to setting up countries, VAT rates, VAT zones, shipping options and currency in your Shoporama online store.
The country setup in Shoporama determines which countries you sell to and which VAT and shipping rules apply to each country. This is also where you set up the VAT zones for B2B and B2C sales.
Overview of your countries
You can find your countries under Settings → Countries. The overview shows all your created countries with:
- Name - The country name as it appears in your shop
- B2B VAT - The VAT rate for business customers
- B2C VAT - The VAT rate for private customers
- Default country - Whether the country is set as the default country
- Free shipping over - The amount limit for free shipping
- Shipping options - Which shipping methods are available for the country
You can change the order of the countries by adjusting the weight and clicking Save order. The order determines how the countries are displayed in checkout.
Create a new country
- Go to Settings → Countries
- Click Create new country
- Enter a name (e.g. "Germany" or "Sweden")
- Select the correct country code (e.g. DE for Germany, SE for Sweden)
- Optionally set a limit for free shipping
- Click Save
Edit a country
Click the edit icon next to a country to open the edit page. Here you can configure all settings for that country.
VAT rates (B2B and B2C)
For each country, you can set separate VAT rates for B2B (business) and B2C (private). This gives you full control over the VAT calculation per country:
- B2B VAT - VAT rate for business customers. Set to 0% for countries where you don't charge VAT on B2B sales (e.g. EU countries with valid CVR)
- B2C VAT - The VAT rate for private customers. In Denmark it is typically 25%.
VAT zones
In addition to VAT rates, for each country you can select a VAT zone for B2B and B2C respectively. The VAT zone determines how VAT is calculated:
- Home country - Standard VAT calculation for your own country
- EU - VAT rules for sales within the EU
- Rest of the world - VAT rules for sales outside the EU
Free shipping
You can set a limit for free shipping per country. When a customer's order exceeds this amount, they automatically get free shipping. Leave the field empty if you don't offer free shipping for that country.
Shipping options per country
For each country, you can select which shipping methods should be available. Select "All" to offer all your created shipping methods or select specific shipping methods for each country. This makes it possible to offer GLS in Denmark and DHL in Germany, for example.
You can also select a default shipping method for the country, which is automatically pre-selected in the checkout.
Default country
Mark a country as Default country to make it the default selection in checkout. When a customer visits your shop, prices and shipping will be displayed based on the default country until they select another country.
Currency
The currency for your online shop is set separately in the general settings. Read more in the article Set currency in your shop. You can enable multiple currencies so customers can see prices in their preferred currency.
Typical setup
A Danish online shop selling to Denmark and Sweden will typically have:
- Denmark - B2C VAT 25%, B2B VAT 25% (or 0% for reverse charge), VAT zone: Home country, default country
- Sweden - B2C VAT 25%, B2B VAT 0%, VAT zone B2C: EU, VAT zone B2B: EU
Tip if you're unsure
If you are unsure about VAT rates and VAT zones for specific countries, we recommend contacting your accountant. VAT rules vary between countries and depend on your company's turnover and registration.
