Favicon

A favicon is the small icon that appears in the browser tab, bookmarks bar and search results next to your online store name. It's a small but important part of your brand identity online.

What is a favicon?

A favicon (favorite icon) is a small icon - typically 16×16 or 32×32 pixels - that visually represents your online store in the browser user interface. You'll see it in tabs, bookmarks, browser history and on mobile devices as an app icon when the user saves your site to the home screen.

Google also displays favicons in mobile search results next to your site name, making it a visible branding element in the SERP.

Where does your favicon appear?

  • Browser tabs: The most visible place. When users have many tabs open, the favicon is the only thing that identifies your page.
  • Bookmarks: Makes it easy to find your shop in the bookmarks list.
  • Google search results: Appears on mobile next to your domain name in the SERP.
  • Home screen shortcut: When users add your shop to their phone's home screen, the favicon is used as an app icon.
  • PWA (Progressive Web App): Used as an icon if your online store functions as a PWA.

Requirements for favicons

For your favicon to be displayed correctly everywhere, you should provide it in multiple sizes:

  • 16×16 px: Browser tabs (classic favicon size)
  • 32×32 px: Retina browser tabs and Windows shortcuts
  • 180×180 px: Apple Touch Icon (iOS home screen)
  • 192×192 px: Android Chrome home screen
  • 512×512 px: PWA splash screen and large app icons

Favicon in Shoporama

In Shoporama, you can upload your favicon directly via the admin panel. The system supports PNG, JPG and SVG formats. The favicon is automatically displayed in 64×64 pixels on your online shop. You can also set an external URL for your favicon if it is hosted elsewhere.

How to make a great favicon

  • Keep it simple: a favicon is extremely small. Use a simple symbol, letter or simplified logo - not your full logo with text.
  • Think contrast: Make sure the icon is visible on both light and dark backgrounds. Avoid very bright colors.
  • Use your brand: Use your brand's primary color and a recognizable element so users can quickly identify your site among many tabs.
  • Test small: Always view your favicon at 16×16 pixels to ensure it's recognizable in the browser tab.
  • SVG is optimal: The SVG format scales perfectly to all sizes and is the most future-proof solution.

Favicons and SEO

Favicons have no direct SEO effect, but they do affect your visibility indirectly:

  • A recognizable favicon in Google search results can increase your click-through rate (CTR)
  • It increases brand recognition across browser tabs and bookmarks
  • Google requires a favicon to display in mobile search results - without it, a generic icon appears
