Slide-in

A slide-in is a small window that slides in from the edge of the screen - typically the bottom corner - while the visitor is browsing your webshop. It is a less disruptive alternative to popups and is used for newsletter sign-ups, offers or important messages.

What is a slide-in?

A slide-in is a type of overlay that animates in from the edge of the browser screen - typically from the bottom left or right corner. Unlike a traditional popup that appears centrally and covers the content, a slide-in is more discreet and allows the user to continue browsing while the message is visible.

Slide-in vs. popup

  • Popup: Centered overlay with background dimming. Requires interaction (close or submit). More aggressive but also more attention-grabbing.
  • Slide-in: Compact window in the corner. Can be ignored. Less disruptive but also easier to miss.
  • Sticky bar: Fixed bar at the top or bottom. Most discreet, least attention-grabbing.

Typical uses

  • Newsletter sign-up: "Sign up and get 10% off" - the most common use of slide-ins.
  • Offers and promotions: "Weekend offer: 20% off selected products" with a link to the offer page.
  • Free shipping reminder: "You only need 150 DKK for free shipping" - dynamic based on cart content.
  • Social proof: "Anders from Copenhagen just bought this product" - real-time social proof.
  • Support chat: Many live chat solutions use the slide-in format.

Slide-in in Shoporama

Shoporama's newsletter popup system supports slide-in as one of the popup types:

  • Slide bottom: Slides up from the bottom of the screen in the center
  • Slide left: Slides in from the bottom left corner
  • Slide right: Slides in from the bottom right corner

You can configure triggers (time delay, scroll depth or exit intent), styling (colors, border radius, width) and cookie-based repeat control.

Triggers for slide-ins

  • Time delay: Show slide-in after X seconds on the page. 5-15 seconds is typical to let the user orient themselves first.
  • Scroll depth: Show when the user has scrolled X% of the page. Shows that the user is engaged with the content.
  • Exit intent: Display when the mouse moves towards the browser close button. Last chance to engage.
  • Page count: Display after the user has visited X number of pages. Signals interest in the store.

Best practices

  • Timing: Don't show the slide-in too early. Let the user browse for at least 10 seconds before interrupting.
  • Mobile considerations: A slide-in that covers half the mobile screen is as aggressive as a popup. Resize it to fit the device.
  • Close button: Make it clear and easy to close. Users who feel trapped will leave the site.
  • Frequency: Don't show the slide-in on every visit. Use cookies to wait 7-30 days between views.
