Suggestive search

Suggestive search is a search feature that suggests products and search terms in real-time as the customer types in the search box. It helps customers find products faster and reduces misspellings.

What is suggestive search?

Suggestive search (also called autocomplete, typeahead or instant search) is a search feature that displays suggestions in a dropdown below the search box as the user types. Suggestions can include product names, categories, search terms and images.

It's one of the most valuable features in an online store because searching users typically have high purchase intent - they already know what they want.

Types of search suggestions

  • Product suggestions: Specific products with image, price and title. Lets the customer click directly to the product page.
  • Search terms: Popular search terms that match what the user types. Helps formulate the search.
  • Categories: Relevant categories (e.g. "Running shoes" when the user types "running").
  • Brands: Brand names that match the search.

Suggestive search in Shoporama

Shoporama has a built-in AJAX-based search function that provides real-time product suggestions. When a customer types in the search box, a query is sent to the server that matches against product titles and returns relevant suggestions - all without reloading the page.

Why is this important?

  • Faster product discovery: Customers find the right product with fewer keystrokes, reducing friction and increasing conversion.
  • Fewer null results: Suggestions guide the customer towards terms that actually produce results, instead of them typing something that doesn't match.
  • Error tolerance: Good search systems handle misspellings and show relevant suggestions anyway.
  • Product discovery: Customers discover products they didn't know you had when they see related suggestions.
  • Higher conversion: Users who use search typically convert 2-3× better than users who browse via navigation because they have high purchase intent.

Best practices for search

  • Show images and prices: Product suggestions with images and prices convert significantly better than plain text.
  • Respond quickly: Suggestions should appear within 100-200ms to feel "instant". Slow search is worse than no search.
  • Limit the number: Show 5-8 suggestions - enough to be helpful, but not so many that it overwhelms.
  • Highlight the match: Highlight the part of the text that matches the user's input (bold or highlight).
  • Handle misspellings: "Nkie" should still suggest "Nike" products.
  • Visible search bar: Place the search box prominently in the header, not hidden behind an icon. Many users prefer search over navigation.
  • Mobile optimization: On mobile, search results should be large enough to tap with a finger.
