What is an abandoned cart?

Cart abandonment occurs when a customer adds items to the shopping cart but leaves your online store without completing the purchase. It's one of the most common phenomena in e-commerce - globally, between 60% and 80% of all shopping carts end up being abandoned. This is completely normal, but it also represents a huge sales potential that you can do something about.

The statistics page

Under Statistics → Abandoned baskets you get a complete overview of your abandoned baskets and your ability to recover them.

The four key metrics at the top

  • Abandoned baskets - the total number of baskets that have been abandoned during the period. The number includes the estimated value of the lost orders.
  • Recovery rate - the percentage of abandoned baskets that nevertheless became fulfilled orders. A recovery rate of 5-15% is typical for webshops with reminder emails.
  • Recovered orders - the number of abandoned baskets that turned into paid orders and the revenue they represent. This is the money you would have lost without the recovery efforts.
  • Reminders sent - number of reminder emails sent to customers with abandoned baskets.

Stacked bar chart

The graph shows abandoned vs. recovered baskets over time, broken down by day or month. The two colors make it easy to see the relationship between lost and recovered sales. Look for spikes - they can indicate technical issues in the checkout flow or campaigns that attracted traffic without converting.

Daily and monthly table

The table gives you detailed figures per day or month: number of abandoned baskets, recovered baskets, recovery rate and estimated lost revenue. Use the table to spot trends and evaluate the effect of changes you have made in your checkout.

What is recovery rate?

Recovery rate is the percentage of abandoned baskets that still end up as completed orders. The most important factor for a good recovery rate is reminder emails - automatic emails sent to customers who have abandoned their cart. In Shoporama, you can enable reminder emails that automatically send a friendly reminder to the customer with a link directly to their cart.

Tips to reduce cart abandonment

  • Enable reminder emails - it's the most effective weapon. A good reminder email can recover 5-15% of abandoned baskets. See open baskets for setup.
  • Reduce shipping surprises - one of the most common causes of abandoned baskets is unexpected shipping costs. Show shipping as early in the checkout flow as possible.
  • Simplify your checkout flow - the fewer steps and fields, the fewer customers abandon. Learn about checkout flow and shipping calculation to optimize the process.
  • Offer multiple payment methods - if the customer doesn't find their preferred payment method, they will abandon the cart. Make sure you offer both cards, MobilePay and any payment agreements.
  • Monitor the recovery rate over time - use the statistics to measure the effect of the changes you make. A rising recovery rate is a clear sign that your efforts are working.

Combine the insights from the abandoned basket statistics with the conversion rate statistics to get a complete picture of where in the buyer journey you are losing customers - and where you can take action.
