Set up Pinterest tracking on your online store
Step-by-step guide to Pinterest tracking in Shoporama: find the Tag ID and access token in Pinterest Ads Manager, enter them under "Webshop," "Tracking," and see which events Pinterest receives, including server-side purchases via the Pinterest Conversions API.
Pinterest is a visual inspiration platform where users actively search for ideas related to home decor, fashion, food, gifts, and DIY projects. This makes Pinterest unique among advertising platforms: Users are often in the mood to buy long before they know exactly what they want. If you sell products that look great in photos—such as home decor, clothing, jewelry, or hobby supplies—Pinterest ads can be a very powerful channel.
In order for Pinterest to optimize your ads and show you what’s actually selling, the platform needs to be notified when customers visit your shop, add items to their cart, and complete purchases. Shoporama’s built-in tracking module handles this automatically. This guide shows you how to set it up.
What You’ll Need
- Shoporama’s tracking module enabled. This requires a Pro or Flex plan and costs DKK 89 per month (excl. tax). See the guide “Tracking in Your Shoporama Webshop.”
- A Pinterest business account with access to Pinterest Ads Manager.
- Recommended: server-side tracking enabled, so your tracking isn’t blocked by ad blockers. See the guide to server-side tracking.
Step 1: Find your Tag ID and access token on Pinterest
Shoporama needs two pieces of information from Pinterest:
- The Tag ID is the number of your Pinterest Tag. You’ll find it in Pinterest Ads Manager under the Conversions section, where you can also create the tag if you don’t already have one.
- The access token is a key that allows Shoporama to send your orders directly to Pinterest via the Pinterest Conversions API. You can create it through your Pinterest Business account, in the same Conversions section of Ads Manager. Look for “Conversions API.”
Pinterest regularly updates its menus, but both items are located under “Conversions” in Pinterest Ads Manager. Copy both values so you have them ready for the next step.
Step 2: Enter the information in Shoporama
- Go to “Webshop ” in the left-hand menu in the admin panel, and select “Tracking.”
- Check the box next to “Enable Tracking” if you haven’t already.
- Under “Platforms,” check the box next to “Pinterest.”
- Fill in the Tag ID and Access Token fields in the Pinterest box on the right.
- Click Save.
Please note that it may take up to an hour for new settings to become fully active on Shoporama’s tracking server.
This is what Shoporama sends to Pinterest
You do not need to add any code to your store yourself. The tracking module automatically records customer behavior and sends the following events from the browser, among others:
- Product views and category page views
- Searches within the shop
- Items added to the cart and cart views
- The individual steps in the checkout process (address, shipping, authorization, and payment)
- Completed purchases with order value and line items
Once an order is paid for, Shoporama’s server also sends the purchase directly to Pinterest via the Pinterest Conversions API. This happens outside the customer’s browser, so the purchase is still recorded even if the customer closes the window too quickly or an ad blocker blocks the tracking. The order number is included in both events, so Pinterest automatically removes duplicates if both the browser and the server manage to report the same order.
The product IDs in your events are the same as those in your Google Shopping feed. If you use the feed for your product catalog on Pinterest, Pinterest can match events directly against the catalog. Read more in the article about product IDs and catalog matching.
Troubleshooting
- Install the Pinterest Tag Helper browser extension in Chrome. It shows which Pinterest events are triggered as you click around your shop.
- If you’re using Consent Mode, data won’t be sent until consent is given. So be sure to accept the cookie banner when testing.
- If you’ve just saved your keys, wait about an hour and try again.
- Check that the Tag ID and access token are entered without any spaces before or after them.
- In Pinterest Ads Manager, you can see which events Pinterest has received in the Conversions section.
If you’re having trouble, please email support@shoporama.dk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to add the code to my online store myself?
No. Once the tracking module is activated and the fields are filled out, Shoporama automatically adds all tracking to your store. You don’t need to modify your theme or copy and paste any code snippets.
Does Pinterest tracking cost extra?
No. The DKK 89 per month covers the entire tracking module for all platforms, such as Facebook, Google, TikTok, Snapchat, and LinkedIn. You don’t pay extra per platform.
Can I run Pinterest tracking at the same time as Facebook and Google?
Yes. Just check the boxes for multiple platforms on the Tracking page and enter the keys for each one. All platforms will receive the same events simultaneously.
How do I check if it’s working?
Click around your shop with Pinterest Tag Helper installed, and add an item to your cart, for example. Then check in Pinterest Ads Manager to make sure events have been received. Remember to accept cookies if you’re using Consent Mode.
What about GDPR and cookie consent?
Enable Consent Mode on the Tracking page, and tracking data will only be sent once the customer has given consent via the cookie banner. Read more in the article about cookie consent and Consent Mode.
