Alt text
What is alt text?
Alt text (alternative text) is a description of an image that is inserted into the HTML code via the alt attribute. The alt text appears if the image cannot be loaded, is read aloud by screen readers for the visually impaired, and is used by search engines to understand the image's content.
Alt text for online stores
For online stores, alt text is important for two reasons:
- SEO – Google uses alt text to understand and rank images in image search
- Accessibility – screen readers use alt text to describe images for people with visual impairments
Good alt text is short and descriptive, such as “Red cotton T-shirt with a V-neck” rather than “image” or “IMG_4523.” In Shoporama, you enter the alt text below the product images, and images in the image library have their own alt text. The keyword analysis in the product’s SEO tab shows if any of the product’s images are missing alt text. Read more in SEO in Shoporama.
