Why Dankort is a must in a Danish webshop
Dankort is still the most used payment card in Denmark, and even though MobilePay and contactless Visa/Mastercard have taken a slice of the pie, a large proportion of Danish shoppers still prefer to pay with Dankort. If your webshop doesn't offer Dankort as a payment method, you'll lose sales, especially among customers over the age of 40, where the Dankort share is highest.
The good news is that Dankort is supported on all the payment gateways we recommend on Shoporama: QuickPay, ePay/Bambora, Mollie, PensoPay and Stripe. You don't need a special Dankort integration to get Dankort in your online shop.
How Dankort works on Shoporama
Dankort is not a standalone gateway. It is a card type that is handled by your payment gateway along with Visa, Mastercard and other cards. When a customer enters their Dankort in your checkout:
- Card data is sent securely to your payment gateway (QuickPay, ePay, Mollie, Stripe or PensoPay)
- The gateway sends card data to the acquirer (typically Nets or Teller for Dankort)
- The acquirer approves and 3D Secure approves via the customer's banking app
- The amount is reserved on the card and the order is created in Shoporama with payment status approved
For you as a store owner, Dankort is no different than Visa or Mastercard. The money is settled through your gateway and acquirer, and you see payments in the Shoporama admin along with your other card payments.
What do you get as a shop owner?
- Lower fees than foreign cards. Dankort typically has lower transaction fees than Visa and Mastercard because the acquirer fee at Nets is lower on Dankort.
- Higher conversion in the Danish market. Some Danish customers abandon checkout if Dankort is not an option. This is especially true for older customer segments and B2B customers.
- Strong security with 3D Secure. Dankort runs with its own secure-by-default flow, where the customer authorizes via bank app or code executor. Friction is minimal, but security is high.
- Refund and partial refund. You can fully refund or partially refund a Dankort payment directly from the order card in the Shoporama admin.
- Recurring subscriptions. If you sell subscriptions, the customer can pay with Dankort via QuickPay or PensoPay (both support Dankort in recurring).
Which gateway should I choose for Dankort?
All Danish gateways on Shoporama accept Dankort. The choice between them is primarily about your other needs:
- QuickPay: Widest range of payment methods. Dankort, Visa, Mastercard, MobilePay, ViaBill, Anyday in one deal. Good if you want it all under one roof.
- ePay/Bambora: Classic Danish gateway, often used in older setups. Stable and well-established.
- Mollie: Strongest if you sell to all of Europe and want Klarna, iDEAL, Bancontact etc. alongside Dankort.
- Stripe: Best if you have an international focus or develop complicated payment logic. Apple Pay and Google Pay are strong here.
- PensoPay: Solid Danish gateway with a focus on recurring payments and B2B.
Having doubts? Start with QuickPay. It's the most used gateway on Shoporama shops and you have Dankort plus all the other Danish payment methods from day one.
How to get started
- Create a Shoporama shop if you don't already have one.
- Choose a gateway: QuickPay is the simplest choice if you primarily sell in Denmark.
- Set up a gateway agreement (typically 1 to 3 business days). The gateway helps with the Dankort agreement with Nets or Teller.
- Enter your API keys in Shoporama under Settings and payment gateways.
- Enable Dankort as a card type in the gateway configuration.

What you should be aware of
Three things to know before you go live with Dankort:
- 3D Secure is mandatory. As a webshop owner, you can't opt out of 3D Secure. It's an EU legal requirement (PSD2). All Shoporama gateways handle it automatically, but it's worth knowing that 3D Secure adds an extra step in the checkout. Read our article about 3D Secure on QuickPay and what to do if you encounter 3D Secure errors.
- Dankort without Visa co-branding cannot be used abroad. If your customers complain that their Dankort was declined in a Swedish or German shop, it's because they have a pure Dankort without Visa. You can't do anything about it from your shop.
- The fee cannot be charged to the customer. EU rules prohibit adding a fee to B2C card payments. You cannot charge a surcharge for paying with Dankort. However, this does not apply to B2B, where fee shifting is typically allowed.
Frequently asked questions about Dankort in online shops
Do I need a separate Dankort agreement or does the gateway agreement cover everything?
You must technically have an agreement with Nets or Teller to accept Dankort. Your gateway (QuickPay, ePay, PensoPay) will typically help you set up the agreement as part of their package so it feels like one process.
Where can I see if a payment has been completed with Dankort?
On the order card in the Shoporama admin, the card type is shown explicitly (Dankort, Visa, Mastercard, etc.) along with the transaction ID. You can also filter the order list by card type if you need to.
What happens if the customer enters incorrect card data?
The gateway returns an error, the customer is notified in checkout and can correct it or choose another payment method. The order will not be created until the payment is approved.
Can I accept Dankort for subscriptions?
Yes, you can. QuickPay and PensoPay support recurring Dankort payments. When the customer subscribes, the card is stored securely at the gateway and future payments are automatically deducted. Read more about subscriptions on your online shop.
Can I block Dankort cards from specific countries?
You can't block the card specifically, but you can restrict which payment methods are shown in which countries. In practice, a Dankort will never appear in a checkout outside Denmark, as the card cannot be issued outside the country.
How long does it take to get Dankort live?
The gateway agreement typically takes 1 to 3 business days to get approved. The actual technical integration between the gateway and Shoporama takes 5 to 10 minutes. Most shops can accept Dankort from day three after setting up.
What do I do if a Dankort payment fails but the money has been withdrawn?
This is rare, but can happen with network errors. First check the gateway manager (QuickPay, ePay etc.). If the payment is there but not in Shoporama, you can manually set the order to paid. Write to support@shoporama.dk if this happens repeatedly.
Does Dankort affect my conversion rate?
Yes, it does. In Danish shops, Dankort typically increases conversion rates by 5 to 15 percent. The effect is greatest for customer segments that do not use MobilePay or foreign cards.
