The upsell-step
Upselling is when you get the customer to choose a more expensive version of the item they’re already looking at. The customer is looking at a 250-gram bag of coffee, and you show them the one-kilogram bag. The customer is looking at the standard model, and you show them the one with an extra two-year warranty.
Upselling or cross-selling?
- Upselling upgrades the same product. The customer moves from a cheaper to a more expensive version.
- Cross-selling adds an extra item alongside the original one.
Here’s how to do it without coming across as pushy
- Show the difference in concrete terms, not just the price. “1 kg—you save 18% per cup” says more than “1 kg—309 kr.”
- Keep price increases small. A jump of 20 to 30 percent is accepted far more often than doubling the price.
- Only suggest something that’s actually better for the customer. Upselling that feels like a sales gimmick costs more in trust than it brings in revenue.
Upselling in Shoporama
You can use the “Related Products” recommendation module and manually select the larger or better versions for each product. If you have variants—such as multiple sizes of the same item—the upgrade is typically handled directly in the variant selector on the product page.
