EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility)
Extended Producer Responsibility(EPR ) is an environmental policy principle that makes producers and importers responsible for their products throughout their life cycle, including collection, recycling and disposal. The principle is based on "polluter pays" and is anchored in EU legislation.
EU directives covered by the EPR
- Packaging Directive 94/62/EC: responsibility for packaging and packaging waste. In Denmark, the national packaging producer responsibility came into force on October 1, 2025.
- WEEE Directive 2012/19/EU: responsibility for electrical and electronic equipment. See WEEE.
- Battery Regulation 2023/1542: responsibility for batteries and accumulators, applicable across the EU.
Who is covered?
The EPR affects all companies that bring packaged goods, electronics or batteries to the Danish market, regardless of whether you manufacture, import or sell via distance selling from abroad. As a webshop owner, you are usually responsible for registering with the relevant collective scheme and reporting quantities.
Tip: Even small webshops can be covered. Always check volume limits and registration obligations with DPA-System or a similar collective scheme.
