Model Context Protocol (MCP)

Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that allows AI assistants like Claude to directly and securely access tools, data and systems - such as a webshop. Shoporama supports MCP so you can control your store by chatting with an AI in Danish.

What is Model Context Protocol?

Model Context Protocol - typically abbreviated MCP - is an open protocol developed by Anthropic (the company behind Claude). It defines a common way for AI assistants to communicate with external systems: read data, call functions and perform actions.

In practice, MCP acts as a socket between the AI and a service. When Shoporama deploys an MCP server, AI clients like Claude can plug in and use all the tools Shoporama makes available - from creating products to extracting statistics.

Why is MCP relevant for online stores?

Before MCP, each AI client had to build its own integration for each service. This meant either limited functionality or expensive custom development. With MCP, the integration is defined in one place - and all MCP-compliant AIs can use it.

For a webshop owner, this means you don't have to code anything or maintain an integration. You just connect an AI client to your shop and the AI can help you with daily operations: creating products, running promotions, editing the front page, getting sales figures and much more.

Which AI clients support MCP?

  • Claude (Anthropic) - full support in Claude Desktop, claude.ai and mobile app
  • Cursor - popular AI code editor
  • Cline, Goose, Cowork - other MCP-compatible clients
  • ChatGPT (OpenAI) - partial support via Custom Connectors

MCP in Shoporama

Shoporama has its own MCP server built in. It exposes over 100 tools to the AI - everything from product_create and order_list to theme_file_put and page_builder_create_page. Access is secured with OAuth 2.0 + PKCE and every action is logged in an audit log.

The easiest way to get started is to read Webshop with Claude, which describes the setup step by step.

Security in Shoporama

MCP connections in Shoporama use the same security standard as banks and large cloud services:

  • OAuth 2.0 with PKCE - no plaintext API keys
  • The AI client gets the same rights as the user connecting to it
  • Access can be revoked at any time
  • Audit log with 90-day history
