GLS settings on shipping options

Explanation of the GLS-specific settings per shipping option in Shoporama: shipping module, DepositService, PrivateDelivery, FlexDelivery and default comment.

When you have a shipping option that ships with GLS, you can adjust a number of GLS-specific settings per shipping method. The settings are located directly on the individual shipping option and control how the package is delivered and what options the customer gets at checkout. Here's an overview of all the fields so you can choose the right setup.

In short: There is no single "GLS type" you choose. Instead, you combine a shipping module (whether the customer should choose a parcel shop) with three checkboxes that enable additional GLS services.

Where do I find the settings?

  1. Go to Settings → Shipping
  2. Click Edit on the shipping option you want to customize
  3. Select Freight module at the top (important for parcel shop)
  4. Scroll down to the GLS settings card
  5. Check the options you want to be active
  6. Click Save

Shipping module (parcel shop or home delivery)

At the top of the shipping option you will find the Shipping module dropdown. This determines whether the customer is given the option to select a GLS parcel shop in the checkout or if the package is delivered directly to the address.

  • GLS parcel shop activates the parcel shop selector. The customer selects a specific GLS shop based on the address and the package is delivered there.
  • Nothing means that the module is disabled. The parcel is sent directly to the customer's address (home delivery).

If you need to offer both parcel shop AND home delivery, create two shipping options, one with the shipping module set to GLS parcel shop and one without the module.

The three GLS checkboxes

Under GLS settings, you will find three checkboxes that each activate a GLS service. They work independently of the shipping module and you can combine them as needed, with one exception (see the Note box).

DepositService gls_deposit_service

Activates a service where the driver can leave the parcel at an agreed location, for example at the front door, in the carport or in a conservatory. The customer's comment from checkout is sent as a delivery instruction. If the customer has not entered anything, your default comment is used (see below).

Note: DepositService cannot be combined with PrivateDelivery on the same shipping option. Select one or the other.

PrivateDelivery gls_private_delivery

Ensures that the package is delivered directly to a private address. Typically used on pure B2C shipping options where the customer does not have to choose the parcel shop. Cannot be combined with DepositService.

FlexDelivery gls_flex_delivery

Gives the customer flexible delivery options via GLS' own system. The customer receives a notification from GLS and can choose to have the parcel delivered at home, at a neighbor's house, at the door or another agreed location. This reduces misdeliveries and gives the customer control over the delivery. FlexDelivery can be freely combined with both DepositService and PrivateDelivery.

Default comment

A text field where you can enter a default instruction for the driver if the customer does not enter a comment in the checkout. Primarily used with DepositService. A typical example is the text Leave at front door. If the customer writes a comment in the checkout, it always takes precedence.

Typical setup in a webshop

Most shops set up two GLS shipping options side by side for the customer to choose:

  • GLS ParcelShop: select GLS ParcelShop as the shipping module. Leave the GLS fly boxes empty. It is the parcel shop that determines the delivery.
  • GLS home to door: leave the shipping module set to None. Enable FlexDelivery so that the customer can control the delivery via GLS notification. If necessary, also enable DepositService if you want to allow driver drop-off.

If you only sell to business customers, you can use a single shipping option without extra services.

Tip: Make sure you have your GLS login details filled in under Settings → General before you create the shipping options. If the information is missing, orders cannot be transferred to GLS. See Set up GLS integration for the full setup.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a "GLS type" I need to select in a dropdown?

No, there isn't. There is no overall type dropdown. Instead, you select the shipping module (parcel shop or nothing) and combine it yourself with the three checkboxes. This gives more flexibility, but requires you to set the right combination. See the "Typical setup" section above for the most common ones.

What is the difference between DepositService and FlexDelivery?

DepositService is your shop's default instruction to leave the package at an agreed location, based on the customer's checkout comment or your default text. FlexDelivery lets the customer choose in GLS' notification system after the order has been shipped, e.g. "deliver to neighbor" or "leave at front door". The two can be enabled at the same time.

Do I need to check all three?

No, you don't. DepositService and PrivateDelivery are mutually exclusive. FlexDelivery can be combined with both. Start by only enabling the ones you actually need to avoid confusion for the customer and driver.

How do I add parcel shop as a delivery option?

Create a new shipping option under Settings → Shipping and set Shipping module to GLS parcel shop. When the customer reaches checkout, a parcel shop selector will automatically appear where the customer can choose their preferred shop based on the delivery address.

Where does the customer write their instructions to the driver? (Sofie, new employee)

In the comment field in the checkout. If the customer leaves the field blank and you have set a default comment, it will be used instead. Check your theme to make sure the comment field is visible to the customer.

Will I incur additional costs by enabling these services? (Gitte, store owner)

You can discuss this with your GLS contact person. Some services like FlexDelivery are included in the standard agreement, while others may be additional. Ask GLS what is included in your customer agreement before you turn everything on.

My parcels are not transferred to GLS, what do I do?

First check that the GLS login details under Settings → General are correct. See also Errors when transferring to GLS for typical error messages and solutions.

Can I have different settings for different shipping options? (Lars, warehouse manager)

Yes, you can. The settings are set per shipping option. For example, you can have one GLS parcel shop shipment without extra services, one GLS home delivery with FlexDelivery and DepositService, and a separate B2B shipment without any of that. This makes it easy to manage the warehouse and picking flow.

Are the options also used for business customers?

PrivateDelivery is targeted at private customers and should not be enabled on B2B freight. DepositService and FlexDelivery are not limited to private customers. If you have separate shipping options for business, leave PrivateDelivery turned off on them.

What happens if I change the settings on a shipping option in the middle of a busy day?

The change will take effect immediately for new orders. Already shipped orders are not affected, and packages that have already been transferred to GLS will retain the services that were set at the time of shipment.
